Sweet, rich Baklava dish

  1. Prepare syrup first.

  2. Then lay the layers.

  3. Continue layering.

  4. Cut the slice and bake.

  5. Pour homemade syrup to absorb.

Start this amazing sweet dish with these simple steps!

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough (about 20 sheets)

  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds, chopped)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Before We Start

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  • Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions (keep covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying out).

  • Prepare the syrup before assembling the baklava so it has time to cool.

Instructions

Prepare the Sauce

Step 1: Have a saucepan, keep it over medium flame. Add 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup water, 2 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 1 tbsp vanilla extract. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the flame and simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Turn off the flame and allow the syrup to cool to room temperature.

Prepare the Baklava Layers

Step 3: Take a baking dish (it would be about 9x13) and brush it with butter or oil.

Step 4: Lay the sheet of phyllo dough and grease it too.

Step 5: Repeat the layering with 6-8 sheets of phyllo, buttering each sheet as you go.

Step 6: Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon in a bowl. Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.

Continue Layering

Step 7: Add another 6-8 sheets of phyllo dough, making sure each layer is buttered. Add a layer of nuts. Do repeat until nuts are used.

Cut and Bake

Step 8: Use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into shapes (diamond, square). Bake in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes until golden brown and crisp.

Pour Syrup to Serve

Step 9: After done time, remove baklava from the oven and pour the syrup we made evenly over hot baklava. Let it sit for a few hours to soak the syrup itself into it.

Then serve it and enjoy!

Serve

Make small plates alongside a napkin. Let the baklava cool at room temperature. Cut into small pieces with a sharp knife. Drizzle it with honey, maple syrup, or sugar syrup on top. Garnish it with chopped pistachios or walnuts (it gives crunch into each bite). Enjoy with a fork or fingers—it's a delicate treat to have!

What Goes with Baklava

Along with baklava, a rich and sweet flaky dessert, it will go well with vanilla ice cream or fresh fruits like sliced oranges, figs, and berries.

Serve it on small plates with a fork (fingers also go well for enjoying eating). Drizzle sugar syrup or honey with chopped pistachios on top. Or enjoy it with black tea (no sugar)!
