But wait, there’s more.

At the end of this recipe, I’ve added a few secret tips to help you after the French toast is cooked.
Most people stop at frying it… but these little secrets will save you and help keep your toast fresh, flavorful, and safe (especially if you're planning to save some for later)!

Ingredients

For Egg

  • Bread slices (preferably a day old)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/4 cup milk (or almond/soy/oat milk as a dairy-free option)

  • 1 tsp sugar (or honey/maple syrup)

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional, adds amazing flavor)

  • Butter or oil for frying

Substitute & Some Alternative

  • Instead of cinnamon, use nutmeg or simply skip it too.

  • Vanilla is for essence, you can skip it or replace it with flavored milk or little cardamom.

  • I use ghee instead of butter (I don’t know why). You also can use ghee or neutral oil if you simply have non-option (but don't toast it into water, it won’t work).

Eggless

  • Bread slices

  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour (or all-purpose flour or cornstarch)

  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)

  • 1 tbsp custard powder or cornstarch (makes it creamy)

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • Butter/oil for frying

Substitute & Some Alternative

  • Yes, use plain flour no problem, or soaked chia seed (1 tbsp chia + 3 tbsp water = 1 egg).

  • Instead of custard powder, just use extra cornstarch.

  • Sugar can be replaced with honey or date syrup.

Before We Start

  • Using cornstarch or custard powder will replace the egg.

  • When you dip your bread, don't over soak it, wanna it'll mushy your toast.

  • Butter has taste but using ghee or oil prevents it from burning.

  • Keep the batter whisky smooth in the eggless version.

  • Using old bread is a good option. (But not the rotten one.)

Instructions

With Egg

Step 1: Take a bowl, crack the eggs, add into the bowl with sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Whisk it well until the ingredients mix well.

(There’s a pro tip: sometimes the egg is rotten, old, or bad so firstly crack it into a separate bowl, then add into the next our batter bowl. Just because of one egg, you'll lose your whole batter.)

Step 2: Dip the bread slices into batter or our mixture and coat it well from both sides (don’t soak it over, it'll mushy your toast).

Step 3: Heat the pan with butter, or ghee, even oil (I don’t prefer oil much for this but yes it works). When it's heated well, cook the slices, each slice until golden brown on both sides.

Step 4: Take off from the frying pan and present it into a glass tray, or even you're more creative than me!

Eggless

Step 1: Into the large bowl, mix flour, milk, sugar, cinnamon, custard powder. Mix it until the mixture is smooth.

Step 2: Now dip the bread slices, each slice into the mixture, let it soak for a couple of seconds.

Step 3: After that, fry in butter or oil/ghee, on the frying pan or tawa and fry until crisp and golden.

Step 4: Take off the slices from the pan and serve them into the tray, plate, or even any way which makes you feel good!
(I’ve some suggestion for you)

How to Represent French Toast?

  • Along with drizzling of syrup, maple one or any

  • Dust with sugar powder, and do slices diagonally.

  • Sprinkle some crushed nuts, almond, walnuts, pistachios.

What Is Best with French Toast?

With the French toast we can add fruits, and can do topping of nuts and swirl of syrup. But here's the right way:

  • Fresh fruits (like berries, banana slice, apples)

  • Maple syrup, honey, or flavored syrups (caramel, honey)

  • Whipped cream or cream cheese

  • Jam, fruit compote, or marmalade

  • Powdered sugar

But what about some spicy savory:

  • Greek salad or cucumber tomato salad

  • Cheese cubes or feta on the sides

  • Fried or scrambled eggs

  • Breakfast sausages or grilled chicken

P.S. Place in parchment paper between slices after cooking (as you've decided to store some for later).

Sprinkle sugar + cinnamon after just cooking, it'll melt slightly and form a caramelized crispiness coating.

That's how you can save and present to your guest!

Stuffed French Toast?

If you’ve never tried stuffed French toast, you’re in for a treat.

It’s like the regular one but with a surprise inside. You take two slices of bread and fill them with something yummy like cream cheese, Nutella, or sliced bananas. Then you dip the whole sandwich in the usual egg and milk mix and cook it until it’s crispy outside and soft inside.

Perfect for when you want something a bit more special.

Baked French Toast?

Baked French toast is just as tasty, but with less effort.

You grab some bread, pour the egg and milk mixture over it, and let it soak. After that, pop it in the oven and let it bake until it’s golden on top and soft in the middle.

This one’s great if you're feeding a family or want to prepare breakfast the night before.

Conclusion

With Egg

Just in the bowl, combine all the ingredients including 2 eggs, 1/4 cup milk (or almond/soy/oat milk as a dairy-free option), 1 tsp sugar (or honey/maple syrup), 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional), 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional, adds amazing flavor), butter or oil for frying.

Then whisk it well and dip your slices for a second, then fry over the low flame each slice until golden crispiness.

Without an Egg

In a bowl, add all the ingredients including 1/4 cup chickpea flour (or all-purpose flour or cornstarch), 1/2 cup milk (any kind), 1 tbsp custard powder or cornstarch (makes it creamy), 1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, butter/oil for frying.

The same thing, whisk it well until well combined and dip your each slice for a couple of seconds and fry on tawa or frying pan until crispy browned.

Nope, they’re quite different, even if they both involve bread and milk.

Funny thing is, it didn’t even come from France.
The idea of soaking bread in eggs and milk and then frying it has been around for centuries.
The name probably came from early American cooks who wanted it to sound fancy. So no, it’s not actually French.

What three secret tips to make French toast?

1. Use bread that’s a little dry. This helps it soak without falling apart.
2. Add a pinch of salt to your egg mix. It brings out the flavor and keeps it from tasting bland.
3. Cook on medium heat. High heat burns the outside before the inside is ready. Medium gives you that golden, perfect finish.
