I wanna teach other methods along with the microwave too, but other methods as well so that you can taste mochi too.

Ingredients

For the Mochi Dough:

  • 1 cup (160g) glutinous rice flour (Mochiko)

  • ¾ cup (180ml) water

  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

  • Food coloring (optional)

For Dusting & Filling:

  • ½ cup (60g) cornstarch or potato starch (to prevent sticking)

  • ½ cup red bean paste, ice cream, or fruit (for filling, optional)

Before We Start

  • Use glutinous rice flour (Mochiko) for the chewy texture.

  • Keep your hands well-starched to prevent the dough from sticking.

  • The microwave method is easiest, but steaming or stovetop methods work too.

Instructions

Make the Mochi Dough

Step 1: Use a simple bowl or a microwave-safe bowl. Add glutinous rice flour, sugar, and water. Mix until smooth. Cover the bowl loosely with plastic wrap and place it in the microwave.

Cook the Dough

Step 2:

  • Microwave Method: Heat on high for a minute, stir, then heat for another 30 seconds to 1 minute until thick and slightly translucent.

  • Steaming Method: Pour the batter into a heatproof dish and steam for 15 minutes until set.

Shape the Mochi

Step 3: Dust a clean surface with cornstarch. Transfer the hot mochi dough onto the surface and sprinkle more cornstarch to prevent sticking.
Step 4: Flatten the dough and let it cool slightly.

Fill the Mochi & Wrap (Optional)

Step 5: Cut the dough into small circles.
Step 6: Place red bean paste, ice cream, or fruit in the center.
Step 7: Gently stretch and seal the edges to form a ball.

And it's done! Ready to eat your MOCHI!
