leave it for 10–15 minutes.

This recipe is from scratch—we’ll do it all the way until serving.

Ingredients

For the Fish:

  • 1 lb (450g) fresh white fish (e.g., sea bass, tilapia, or cod) (substitute: shrimp for a seafood mix)

  •  ½ cup lime juice (substitute: lemon juice or a mix of both)

  •  ½ tsp salt

  •  ½ tsp black pepper

For the Flavor:

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

  •  1 jalapeño or red chili, finely chopped (optional for spice)

  •  1 small tomato, diced (optional)

  •  ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

  •  1 garlic clove, minced

  •  ½ tsp cumin (for depth of flavor)

For Serving:

  • 1 medium avocado, sliced (optional)

  • Tortilla chips or toasted corn (substitute: lettuce cups for a low-carb option)

Before We Start

  • Use fresh fish – It should be sushi-grade if possible.

  •  Chill ingredients – Cold fish and lime juice enhance the flavor.

  •  Marination time matters – Too long makes the fish tough; 15–20 minutes is ideal.

Instructions

Prepare the Fish

Step 1: Wash the fish with salt and vinegar to remove any smell. (First, apply salt and vinegar over it, keep it aside for an hour, then wash it and proceed with further steps.)
Step 2: On a cutting board, dice the fish into bite-sized cubes.
Step 3: Place the pieces into a bowl and add a little salt, black pepper, and lemon juice.
Step 4: Let it marinate for 15–20 minutes.

Add Flavor

Step 5: Add red onion, jalapeño, tomato, cilantro, garlic, and cumin. Mix the ingredients together.
Step 6: Taste it, and if needed, mix it into the fish. Let it marinate for 5 minutes before serving.

Serve

Serve with avocado slices and tortilla chips.

Set a glass bowl and serve on a wooden board with sides of tortilla chips, avocado, and corn. Use a napkin alongside and set lime juice with it.
