Spaghetti Bolognese is a dish of spaghetti paired with a meat sauce from Bologna, Italy. While the traditional sauce, ragù alla Bolognese, is typically served with wider pasta like tagliatelle, pairing it with spaghetti became popular in places like the U.S. and the U.K. in the 20th century. The name Spaghetti Bolognese actually came from outside Italy.

Let’s turn on the flame and start cooking!

Ingredients:

  • 200g ground beef

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 1 carrot, chopped

  • 1 cauliflower, cut into long strips

  • 1 celery stalk, chopped

  • Oregano

  • Basil

  • Crushed cumin

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup milk or cream (optional)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 250g spaghetti

  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Take a frying pan (I’m using a non-stick, but any type works). First, wash it and place it on medium flame. Add 1 tbsp of oil or ghee (I’m using olive oil). Add the diced onion and garlic (you can use garlic-ginger paste too). Stir, but don’t wait for it to brown. Add the chopped carrot and cauliflower. Stir and let them soften.

Step 2: Add the ground beef. Spread it in the pan and cook until it turns completely brown. You’ll start to smell the delicious aroma.

Step 3: Once the beef is browned, add the crushed tomatoes, a pinch of salt, and black pepper. Pour in half a cup of milk or cream if you want a creamier sauce (optional). Stir occasionally and let everything simmer for 20-30 minutes.

Step 4: In a pot, add water for your 250g of spaghetti. Add a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp of oil. Let it come to a boil, then add the spaghetti. Boil for 10-12 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes to prevent sticking.

Step 5: While the spaghetti is boiling, add cumin, basil, oregano, and the chopped celery to the pan. Add 1 tsp of sugar. Let everything cook and blend in the flavors.

Step 6: Strain the spaghetti and set it aside. Don’t mix it yet. Check your pan; the sauce should be ready. Take a plate, add the spaghetti, and spread it. Spoon the meat sauce on top, spreading it in the center.

Step 7: You’re done! Serve it, take a bite, chew, and enjoy!

Don’t know how to serve it? Let’s do it together.

  • Take a plate and spread the spaghetti.
  • Shape it into a peak in the center.
  • Spoon the meat sauce on top, right in the middle.
  • Sprinkle fresh parsley, basil leaves, and a bit of coriander.
  • Done!

Conclusion:

To make Spaghetti Bolognese, heat oil in a pan and sauté chopped onion and garlic. Add veggies (carrot, cauliflower) and stir, then add minced beef and spread it evenly. Mix in crushed tomatoes, salt, black pepper, and milk or cream. Let it simmer on low flame for 20-30 minutes.

Boil spaghetti in salted water with a little oil for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add basil, oregano, celery, cumin, and 1 tsp sugar to the sauce. Once done, strain the spaghetti and plate it with the Bolognese on top. Garnish with parsley or basil.

Enjoy your homemade Spaghetti Bolognese!

How long does it take to boil spaghetti?

The package usually states a time limit, but it can vary slightly. Spaghetti typically boils in 10-12 minutes.

Does Bolognese need milk?

No, milk or cream is optional and used for a creamier texture. You can cook it without either; traditionally, milk is added to soften the acidity of the tomatoes.

Why is Bolognese so expensive?

The cost comes from quality ingredients like good cuts of meat, herbs, butter, milk, and fresh vegetables.

What makes Bolognese bitter?

Too many herbs can make it bitter. Adding a bit of sugar can balance the flavors. Also, avoid overcooking the tomato puree and use a low flame.

Do carrots reduce acidity in tomato sauce?
