You’ll Need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 2–4 garlic cloves, minced

  • 3 tomatoes, chopped

  • A pinch of sugar

  • Dried oregano (optional, for added flavor)

  • Dried basil (optional, for extra taste)

  • Salt, to taste

  • Red chili flakes, to taste

Instructions: Steps to Make Spaghetti Sauce

Step 1: Take a pot and add 2 cups of water. Add the 3 tomatoes (or enough so they're fully submerged). Let them boil for about 3 minutes, but check after 3 to ensure they're soft. Remove the pot from the stove, strain the water, and let the tomatoes cool. Once cooled, peel and chop them finely.

Step 2: In a frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil (adjust as needed based on your quantity; this recipe makes a large bowl of sauce). Add ½ cup of chopped onion and 2 minced garlic cloves. Sauté until they turn a light golden or pinkish color (be careful not to overcook, as dark onions can change the sauce’s taste).

Step 3: When the onions and garlic are lightly golden, add the chopped tomatoes. Sprinkle in ½ teaspoon of sugar and stir gently for a few seconds.

Step 4: Add the dried oregano and basil (optional—you can skip this if you prefer).

Step 5: Add 3 pinches of salt (or adjust to your taste) and 1.5 teaspoons of red chili flakes (I love it spicy, so feel free to tweak this to your liking).

Step 6: Mix the ingredients gently so the sauce stays a bit chunky. Don't over-stir; just make sure everything is evenly spread for the best flavor.

Step 7: Pour the sauce over your spaghetti and dig in! But remember—enjoy every bite!

Conclusion: How to Make Spaghetti Sauce at Home

Start by adding 3 tomatoes to 2 cups of water and boiling until they become soft. Strain the water and let the tomatoes cool to room temperature, then peel and chop them finely. On another burner, heat a frying pan (you can use either a non-stick or regular frying pan) and add 1 tablespoon of oil.

Coat in the chopped onion and 2–4 chopped garlic cloves, letting them turn light pink (you know the look!). Add the chopped tomatoes and spread them evenly in the pan. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of sugar and let it rest for a few seconds.

You can add dried oregano and basil to boost the flavor, but if you don’t have them, it’s okay to skip this step. Finally, add a few pinches of salt and 1.5 teaspoons of chili flakes. That’s it—you’re done! Use this sauce with your favorite spaghetti, pasta, macaroni, or even as a pizza sauce. It’s all up to your taste!

Give it a try and enjoy it with your family! I’ll be back with lots of simple, easy recipes, so you’ll never have to worry about searching for ideas.

FAQs

Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Macaroni, and Pizza Sauce: Are They Really Different?

So, are spaghetti sauce, pasta sauce, macaroni sauce, and pizza sauce different? Or do they have different tastes? The answer: not really! They might seem different, and sometimes they are, but most of the time, they’re made with the same base recipe (Which i gave you above).
You can use fewer ingredients to make them. So no, they don’t require entirely different recipes. And yes, you can skip the dried ingredients (like oregano and basil) if you don’t have them on hand.
P.S. For pizza sauce, you must add oregano, dried basil, and a bit of ketchup too. Trust me, this will give you that true pizza sauce flavor (highly recommended!).

Can We Store It? How Long Will It Stay Fresh?

Yes, you can store it! It will stay fresh for about a week, but not much longer than that.
P.S. Always store it in the fridge or freeze it, and don’t ever leave it outside.

What Can I Use If I Don't Have Spaghetti Sauce?

Use the recipe I shared above (and below when you scroll down). It’ll give you the same taste you’re craving.

What Does Spaghetti Sauce Contain?

Spaghetti sauce gets its rich red color from tomatoes, which also bring a mix of sweet and spicy flavors, thanks to added sugar or tamarind (optional) and chili flakes. Many people also use different sauces, like red chili pepper sauce. The garlic and onion in the mix add depth to the flavor and a hint of their distinct taste.

What If I Don't Have Tomatoes?

If you don’t have tomatoes, there’s not a perfect replacement. The closest substitutes are tomato ketchup, tamarind pulp, or chili sauces—if the red color isn’t a must. But really, if you’re making spaghetti sauce, having tomatoes is ideal!

What Is the Best Replacement for Tomato Sauce?

You can still make a delicious spaghetti sauce, even without tomato sauce. If you want that classic red color, refer back to the question above. If not, hot spices like cumin, cloves, black pepper, red chili flakes, a squeeze of lemon, and a little ketchup will create a tasty version.

Do They Put Sugar in Sauce?

Yes, they do! If your sauce has a sweet and spicy taste, chances are there’s sugar in it (or sometimes plum or tamarind). Sugar is the more common choice, but plum can be used too. So yes, sugar is definitely added to sauce.
