Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for spice)

  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil

  • 1/4 cup water (adjust as needed)

  • Oil for frying

  • Cheddar cheese or cheese cubes

  • 2 eggs

Before we start

  • Sift the flour to remove any lumps.

  • Gather all ingredients for easy preparation.

  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat for frying.

  • If the shapes stick to the pan, after preparing the shapes, prepare the flour paste (half a bowl of water and enough flour to thicken the batter) or dip the shapes into eggs (crack eggs into a bowl and mix with a fork, then dip the shapes into it and fry in the hot oil).

Instructions

Prepare the dough

Step 1: Take a bowl, add 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/2 tsp chili flakes. Mix it.
Step 2: Add 1 tbsp butter or oil (melted) and start mixing until crumbly.
Step 3: When the dough is crumbly, add a little water to knead it properly. Gradually add water to form a smooth dough.
(After the dough is kneaded, turn it over a floured surface and roll it.)

Shape the snacks

Step 4: Make your desired shape, whether with a knife or cutter, and roll out the dough.
Step 5: Shape them as desired (e.g., a circle), then place a cheddar cheese or cheese cube into it. Cover it. Set all the shapes aside, covered.

Fry until golden

Step 6: Heat the frying pan with oil over medium heat until the oil is warm and starts bubbling.
Step 7: Add the pieces to the pan, making sure they don’t stick together (if they stick, dip them in a water-flour paste or dip in egg batter, then fry; they won’t stick). Fry until golden brown and crispy.
Step 8: Place the balls on a plate (lay a paper towel over the plate, then place the balls on top).

Let them cool slightly, then drizzle any sauce such as mustard and green mayo, and serve!

Serve

Serve with chutney (tomato or tamarind sauce, also known as imli ki chutney) or mayonnaise. Place a paper towel or parchment on a plate, spread the fried snacks over it, and serve with side sauces.

You are done!

What goes with snacks

Nothing goes better with snacks than sauces and tea, which is a common tradition in Pakistan and India. You can also enjoy them with green tea, English tea, black coffee, and sauces like tomato, tamarind, coriander and mint sauce, or even with mayonnaise and mustard, if you prefer.

Conclusion

Take a bowl and add dry ingredients: flour, salt, baking powder, chili flakes, black pepper. Then, add melted butter or oil and mix until crumbly. Gradually add water to form a smooth dough. Make portions of dough, then turn it onto a floured surface and roll out to the desired shape (I prefer circles). Place cheddar cheese or cheese cubes (or your favorite filling) onto the circle, then cover it.

On the other side, heat oil until it starts to shimmer. Add shapes into the oil, making sure they don’t stick. If they do, dip them into water-flour paste or an egg batter before frying. Fry in the pan until golden brown and crispy, then place on a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve after drizzling with mustard, mayonnaise, and green sauce.
